The story
Why this place matters
Gukje Market took shape after liberation in 1945 as people traded overseas goods left behind or brought back to Korea. During and after the Korean War, refugees built stalls here to support themselves, turning the district into one of the country’s largest traditional markets.
That history survives in a dense network of buildings and alleys selling everyday goods rather than one carefully arranged souvenir experience. The maze is part of the character, but first-time visitors should save a meeting point.
